If you've ever been totally engrossed in a book or movie and lost all track of time or didn't hear someone calling your name, you were experiencing a state similar to a hypnotic one."
It is important to know that all hypnosis is self-hypnosis. The role of a hypnotist or hypnotherapist is to aid in facilitating the trance state, working with a willing participant. The participant will be able to speak and move around while in trance. (Even use the restroom if needed!) Contrary to Hollywood representation, one is in complete control while in trance; free-will and moral judgement are not affected by this state of awareness. The conscious mind is still present while in trance. This also allows for the participant to remember the experience in detail.
Hypnosis is a state of awareness that results from the combination of deep relaxation and intense focus, also known as "trance". In trance the brain connections function differently. This allows one's subconscious mind to be easily accessed and highly open to suggestion. The most important factor to making beneficial changes is one's will and desire to do so. The processing that takes place on the conscious and unconscious levels in hypnosis support empower and enhance the participant's ability to make desired changes.
In a session, the participant will get comfortable with their head and neck supported. The practitioner will verify the goal for the session then lead the participant through a hypnotic induction. While in hypnosis, the participant may be given direct suggestions, guided with visualization and may be prompted to engage in dialogue. Sessions are between 1 and 3 hours depending on the focus of the session. Following the prompts, the participant will then emerge to full awareness of mind and body - feeling fully alert. There will be a brief overview of the experience prior to concluding the session.
All hypnosis is self-hypnosis. One is not 'being hypnotized" but rather participating in hypnosis by following the prompts and suggestions of the facilitating hypnotist. An openness and willingness to participate are imperative for success. Some medical conditions require additional support physically and or mentally for hypnosis which may be beyond our scope of practice at Grasse River Wellness.
